Spirals was inspired by the Austrian painter Hundertwasser. He writes often of spirals throughout nature and throughout our lives. He believes that life is not as a series of circles, constantly returning to the same point (and consequently ultimately static), but as a continuous spiral. We may think that we are continually retreading the same ground, revisiting the same situations and issues, but in fact we only return to the same “neighborhood”. Time and experience have altered us, however imperceptibly, and we have grown and changed. When we confront what seems to be the same old situation, WE are different. Spirals was written while living in Vienna with the hope that, amidst what seemed like an endless series of dead ends and reversals, life was indeed moving forward, outward and onward.
