Peter Askim conducts an orchestra of 100 cellos in this memorial concert honoring American cellist and founding member of Beaux Arts Trio, Bernard Greenhouse. It also celebrates the
10th anniversary of the university's Cello Choir. The performance will
feature groups of 4-8 cellists and concludes with a mass cello
orchestra.
Ayane Kozasa, winner of the 2011 Primrose International Viola Competition performs "Inner Voices" (the required piece for the Primrose Competition) and conducts a Viola Masterclass at Idyllwild Arts as part of a Southern California masterclass and teaching tour. The LONG-awaited West Coast premiere of singer/songwriter/guitar legend Richard Thompson's "Cabaret of Souls" comes to Royce Hall as part of the UCLA Live series.
A talent show set in the underworld (think American Idol in Hell...), "Cabaret" is part oratorio, part theater and unlike anything you've seen before. Featuring Richard Thompson, Harry Shearer (Spinal Tap, The Simpsons), Judith Owen, Deborah Dobkin and Pete Zorn and the Idyllwild Arts Academy Orchestra, conducted by Peter Askim.

As part of his Residency at the Elan International Music Festival, Peter Askim will conduct his string orchestral piece "As Glaciers Thaw..." in the Gala Concert which concludes the 2010 festival. Performed widely, including by the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, the work has gotten fantastic audience reactions wherever it has traveled.
Composer-in-Residence Peter Askim's work for solo viola, "Aus einem April" will be performed by Maria Paterakis at the Elan International Music Festival. Based on Rainer Maria Rilke's poem of the same name, the piece celebrates the feeling of rebirth that accompanies the arrival of spring.
Cabaret of Souls is a musical chronicle set in Hell with a score written by Richard Thompson and featuring Danny Thompson, Harry Shearer (The Simpsons, Spinal Tap), Judith Owen, Debra Dobkin, Pete Zorn and string ensemble conducted by Peter Askim. With The Keeper and his assistants bored with their custodial duties, they decide to stage a talent contest, dragging various lost souls out of the darkness to perform songs that reflect their recent lives.
Peter Askim joins the artist faculty of the Elan Festival of Dallas as Conductor and Composer-in-Residence, June 12-26.

A meditation on the different meanings, sensations and experiences of time and its passing, the program will feature renowned jazz pianist/composer Vijay Iyer (www.vijayiyer.com) performing the West Coast Premiere of his "Interventions" for Piano, Electronics and Orchestra, commissioned by the American Composers Orchestra.
The concert will also include the World Premiere of Lawrence Dillon's "Figments and Fragments" (commissioned by the Idyllwild Arts Academy Orchestra and the Richard P. Wilson Fund for New Music) and the World Premiere of Peter Askim's "Still Points: Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra", (featuring Tucson Symphony Principal Trombonist Michael Becker), based on T.S. Eliot's "Four Quartets".
Also on the program are Pierre Jalbert's exquisite "Les espaces infinis" and Aaron Jay Kernis's driving "Too Hot Toccata".

BYU School of Music faculty member Eric Hansen will perform a varied program of traditional and new bass music at 7:30 p.m. in the Maeser Building Lecture Hall. Peter Askim's "Islands" will be a Utah premiere, and Andrew Kohn's "Two Bits" will be a world premiere. Peter Askim performs a "Mini-Concert" of contemporary bass works as part of the Hawaii Contrabass Festival.
Double Bassist/Composer Peter Askim performs his "Spring Essence: 3 Vietnamese Songs for Soprano and Double Bass" with soprano Vicki Gorman, as well as "Valentine" by Jacob Druckman and the World Premiere of a new work by pianist/composer Robert Pollock. A collaboration with Ebb and Flow Arts.
The Brigham Young University Symphony Orchestra performs Peter Askim's "Moving, Still" under the direction of conductor Eric Hansen.
Double Bassist/Composer Peter Askim performs his "Spring Essence: 3 Vietnamese Songs for Soprano and Double Bass", as well as works of Street and Dvorak. A collaboration with Serenata Santa Fe.
